Quand Dieu devient Allāh: Comment les Européens ont qualifié le Dieu de l’islam?

Abstract

The translation of the Arabic word Allah in European Qur'ans seems rela-tively simple. In all Latin texts from the medieval and modern periods, it is translated as Dominus or Deus. However, a linguistic phenomenon appears in the 18th century and becomes widespread in the 19th century: authors transcribe Allah without translating it as God. This gradual change signifies a shift in the understanding of Islam. Muslims, who were truly worshippers of God, despite the perceived flaws in their faith, now become worshippers of another divine entity. It is no longer their faith that is false, but their God himself.
