The Islamic “religious field” in Italy has presented itself from the beginning as a diverse reality with agents competing for control of its symbolical religious capital. Such a competition takes place within the relationship of the Islamic religious field with the Italian government. The symbolical and the material capital creates a multiplication and diversification of organizations that aspire to represent Islam in Italy. Changes in state policies and the frequent turnover of leaders within the political parties complicate the agreement between the Italian Republic and the Islamic community concerning full recognition of equal religious rights for Muslims in Italy.
